Jhansi: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad Ahmed, and one Ghulam, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi. The encounter was carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) team of UP Police, led by Deputy SPs Navendu and Vimal.

Both Asad and his aide Ghulam were carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each, said UP STF in a statement. Sophisticated foreign-made weapons were recovered by the police.

The development came a day after Atiq Ahmed was brought to Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj from Gujarat's Sabarmati jail. Ahmed, a convict in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case yesterday said that he is still alive because of the media while he was being taken to Prayagraj. Asked if his life is under threat, the former Uttar Pradesh MLA and Lok Sabha member said, aap logo ka shukriya (thanks to all of you). It's because of you (the media) that I am safe.”

The 60-year-old and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were produced before a court earlier today in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Umesh Pal murder case

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was shot dead outside his residence in Prayagraj's Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year.

A case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmed, Ashraf, their family members and others on the basis of a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal.

The FIR was lodged under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Atiq fears encounter

Atiq Ahmed has expressed apprehension that he might get killed in a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

He also approached the Supreme Court last month claiming he and his family have been falsely implicated as accused in the Umesh Pal case and that he might get killed.

The top court, however, rejected his plea but granted him liberty to approach Allahabad High Court for protection over his claim that his life is under threat.
