A heritage lantern worth Rs 50,000 has gone missing from Garden B at Five Gardens at Dadar Parsi Colony.
Garden B had been revamped in April.
“It has been more than a month that one of the heritage lanterns have gone missing. The complaint has been sent to the horticulturist, but no action has been initiated,” said Nikhil Desai, resident and member of F-North Citizen federation.
Earlier this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had bought 35 lamp posts at a total cost of Rs15 lakh to adorn the grade-II heritage precinct gardens.
With these gardens being frequented by drug addicts at night, residents fear that one of them might have stolen the lantern.
Residents also complained that there is no gardener or guard for the garden. Moreover, there is no contractor for its upkeep.
“After spending inordinate money for its revamp, the civic administration has left the garden to rot. Eight months have passed, but no garden contractor has been appointed. The BMC has spent Rs2 crore on the revamp of the garden. The benches, which were worth Rs 30,000, have turned pale and now one heritage lantern has been stolen. The garden is in a complete state of neglect,” Desai added.
Zarine Engineer, granddaughter ofMancherji Joshi, the founder of the Dadar Parsi Colony, said: “The heritage garden is being exploited. Recently, Shiv Sena activists had set up a stage and loudspeakers in the garden without permission for a drawing competition. If this continues, it will soon become another ground like Shivaji Park.”
She is also the chairperson of the Mancherji Edulji Colony Residents’ Association.
But, SY Kurhade, assistant municipal commissioner of the ward, said he was unaware of the incident.
“It has not come to my knowledge if the heritage lamp post has been stolen. We will probe into the matter,” he said.
Kurhadeadded that though there are no garden contractors to maintain the gardens, their upkeep will be taken care of by the ward level horticulturist.
