Parsi hospital rent lease sparks row

There are plans to convert the century-old defunct Parsi Lying-In Hospital in Fort into a super-specialty orthopaedic facility. But some members of the Parsi community are worried that the proposal to lease it to non-Zoroastrians will not be in their interest as lease rent from the new facility will be meager.
The company that has offered to lease the property said that the facility will benefit the community as the hospital will belong to them after the lease period ends.
The hospital’s managing committee has already made a proposal with a health services company to create a 30-year lease for a 100-bed facility that will be the city’s first exclusive centre for orthopaedic treatment. The proposal has been sent to the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) which is the lease-holder of the property.
The BPP said that the proposal came to them just a week ago. “As owners of the property, our approval is needed for the proposal to go ahead. The matter will be put up before the BPP board,” said BPP chairman Dinshaw Mehta.
Mehta said he was against the plan to lease out the building. “We are shocked at the proposal. The hospital building is prime property in the heart of Mumbai and is worth at least Rs 100 crore. We do not think it is in the interest of the Parsi community to lease it out for just a crore,” said Mehta.
Advocate Minoo Shroff, member of the hospital’s managing committee, said that the proposal was still in the discussion stage. “It (proposal) is still tentative,” he stated.
