Muncherji Cama was elected as a trustee to the Bombay Parsi Punchayet
(BPP) on Monday, defeating rival Anahita Desai, a representative of the
World Alliance of Parsi Irani Zarthoshtis, an orthodox community
organisation, by 1,634 votes.
The BPP is the apex body of the Parsi community and handles administrative affairs such as allocating flats owned
by the trust and providing financial aid. The BPP has seven trustees.
One seat fell vacant when Noshir Dadrawala resigned from the Board in
April.
The BPP by-elections were held for five days between June 19 and July 3 and were marred with allegations of being ostentatious.
Four candidates were vying for the vacant post.
“The community wanted somebody who is religiously tolerant and not a fundamentalist hence, they chose me. It is my aim to eradicate poverty and misery from the community during my tenure,” said Cama, who is the chairman and managing director of the Gujarati daily Bombay Samachar.
Cama received 5134 votes, while Desai received 3510 votes. “The community has given its verdict in the larger interest of the Parsi society. We needed somebody who is an independent thinker and planner and Muncherji Cama fits the bill completely,” said BPP chairman, Dinshaw Mehta.
