Parsi temple in Bangalore gets some respite from city buses

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to make a minor change in the route of 138 buses that leave the Shivajinagar terminus, and enter KG Balekundri Circle near the Parsi temple and Indian Express. Buses plying towards Ulsoor, KR Puram, Marathahalli, Neelasandra and Vivekanagar will now leave Shivajinagar and move towards Bowring Hospital, and then take a right at Cubbon Road.
The BMTC estimates that this minor change could make for a saving of nearly Rs20,000 per day, on fuel. However, there are larger issues too that will be addressed with the change.
The SG Balekundri Circle, which falls very near the Parsi temple, would be decongested. The Parsis in the city had earlier sought that a change be made to reduce the traffic and congestion at the corner where their temple is located, so that the sanctity of the place of worship is maintained.
“Two signals can be avoided by buses moving towards Ulsoor, Marathahalli, Trinity Church and Viveknagar, at Balekundri Circle and BRV Theatre on Cubbon Road with this change, and we expect that the decongestion of traffic too will help save time and fuel,” said S Shivaprakash, assistant traffic manager, Shivajinagar terminal.
Shivaprakash said that 138 buses take 997 trips on this route to and from Shivajinagar each day. “We spoke to the DCP BA Muttana of the Bangalore traffic police, and he was all for this plan.
A dedicated bus lane from Shivajinagar to Bowring Hospital would be made, and we will have to put up diversion notices clearly to aid orderly movement of traffic,” Shivaprakash said.
If, as estimated, the corporation saves `20,000 each day through this change, the savings from the change of route could amount to quite a neat sum.
“We save fuel, we also spare the environment that much of a burden. We have no real estimate of the reduction in pollution, but over a period of time, the change will be apparent,” said Sampangi Ramegowda, a senior official with the BMTC.
